5 Things Every Artist Must Know Before Signing A Record Deal

This article originally appeared on  Performer Magazine .   You've finally made it. A record label recognized your talent and offered you what seems like the deal of a lifetime. But before you sign on the dotted line, make sure you actually understand what you're signing so your dreams of fame and fortune don't turn into a nightmare. Here are five tips every artist should consider before signing their first recording contract. 1. Watch out for contracts with an initial term lasting more than one year Typically, the initial length of a recording contract is one year. This one year term is generally followed by several option periods, where the record label is free to renew your contract for additional time periods if they like the work you're producing.  By limiting the length of your contract to one year, not including option periods, you prevent a record label from effectively controlling your life and creative work for an unreasonable amount of time. You n

WHY NOBODY PAVED A WAY FOR BURNA BOY written by James Soul- John

Let me begin by saying everyone is free to have their opinion about certain issues as personal point of views differs. I cannot criticize Burna for holding his personal view about his birth, growth and rise in the music industry, in whatever context he made that statement, I go with him, Nobody got him where he is, he made a way for himself through the grace of God and his fans. Will Wizkid, Davido or any one else be reckoning with him today if not for his hardwork and resilience even aside his natural talent, while we talk about the legendary Fela's work being a source of his blow, let's not forget that he's keeping the Afro-beat legacy of the Afro-beat legend intact which even the children of the mystro himself are yet to criticize instead embrace him for his approach. His debut LIKE TO PARTY was accepted worldwide including the follow up TONIGHT without Burna Boy sounding a bit Afro-beat, YAWA followed suit with a fusion and recall of Galala and Konto to rej

SOME EFFECTIVE WAYS TO PROMOTE YOUR MUSIC

I’m sure you’re already aware of how important promoting your music is. Getting your music heard is just as important as making the music and licensing it. It won't matter if you have the best song no one listens to, it’s almost like it doesn’t exist. So, in an attempt to send you in the right direction for promoting your music – I’ve put together a list of effective ways to promote your music. Do The Music Business

As an artist, if you've ever called to work with me; I must have told you using downloaded beats are simply a waste of your money. Why? You basically have no license/rights to monetize or perform for profit with it, unless you reach out to that producer for a license. You'd be paying to record, paying to promote on free sites that gets you no royalty & obviously be risking a law suit! Where is the sense in that nahh?! Your producer won't tell you cuz he too don't know the halve of it.  Don't just do music, do the business! Start purchasing license to your tracks today. Mixing with EQ: How to Properly EQ a Mix

Mixing with EQ properly and effectively is a dark art and precisely knowing how to use EQ properly, when, and on what instrument is one of the hardest aspects of balancing a mix to make it sound as good as possible. EQ is one of the two fundamental tools used in making a recording sound livelier and more musical, sitting alongside compression. Other things like reverb and spatial effects are also very important. Before of all of those, though, knowing how to use EQ in your mix will be your first step to the best results. Here is an in-depth guide on  types of EQ  and their individual functions so you can prepare yourself for mixing with EQ. Mixing with EQ properly has many benefits You allow instruments to balance tonally by carving spaces for them to sit alongside each other in the frequency spectrum. Imbalanced instruments will sound odd when playing together – for example, a loud synth and guitar can’t sit in exactly the same areas of the frequency spectrum without clash

Mastering and Mixing: What is the difference?

Whilst most of us recognise that mastering and mixing are two different things, it’s often a blurred line that separates them. Although distinctly different, both are equally important and you cannot have one without the other.  Mixing  is the stage where each of the separate instruments and sounds in your song can be treated and processed individually. They are then combined together into a singular stereo mix down ready for mastering.  Mastering   is where the stereo mix down is enhanced, balanced and adjusted to ensure continuity across sound systems as well as an industry standard, release ready sound. So what is mixing in more detail? Mixing is the step that occurs once all the writing and tracking has been completed. The initial steps of mixing will include labelling and arranging all the audio clips within a session. Once the session is prepared, you can set out implementing processes such as equalisation, filtering, compression and panning to begin to bring your tra

The Do’s and Don’ts of Recording Your Music

DON’Ts 1. Don’t get trapped by dead ideas We’ve seen it happen time and time again with record labels and management companies: pouring thousands of hours and millions of dollars into flopped albums that no one wants to listen to. The myth of easily gaining popularity and fans through the right amount of promotion and muscle is strong, but it won’t bring lasting fans and a career in the industry. It’s far more common for that road to be paved with tombstones of flash-in-the-pan bands, musicians promoted to death before their music was ready. The second you realize that anything can become popular, you also realize that you need to take the craft of writing and recording music very seriously and make sure it comes out the best it could be. Don’t promote dying songs that aren’t moving people; instead, focus first on making the songs people want to hear. The Do’s and Don’ts of Recording Your Music 2. Don’t release a demo By definition, a demo is a demonstration of what you cou

Freeware: Gigmate by Manx Synthesizer

Freeware: Luftikus by Ikjb

Luftikus  is a digital adaption to an  analog EQ  with fext half-octave bands and additional high frequency boost. As an improvement to the hardware it allows deeper cuts and supports a keep-gain mode where overall gain changes are avoided. Luftikus has half-octave bands at 10, 40, 160 and 640 Hz, completed by a high shelf at 2.5 kHz. For adding sparkle to recordings a further high frequency boost at 2.5, 5, 10, 20 and 40 kHz can be used. The overall design was improved to allow deeper cuts. The range -5 to +10 is the original range while below -5 results in cuts unavailable in hardware. Modes The hardware adds overall gain which can lead to clipping. To counter this an output trim as well as the “Keep Gain” mode is available. While the trim allows manual adjustments the “Keep Gain” mode will keep (more or less) the overall loudness by reducing gain in non-boosted areas. The “Analog” mode models a more analog behavior while in “Mastering” the controls become stepped and the

Which Licence is best for you? Non Exclusive or Exclusive.

When a producer uploads a new Beat, for the purchase of the beat the producer gives the artist a license to use with which the artist has a series of user rights to create and distribute the song. That license agreement is the legal proof that the producer has given a permission to the artist to use the Beat. Therefore when an artist downloads a free Beat (even if it is sent by the producer) or records a sample of a Beat to use it, if he does not have a license he will never be able to use that song since the Beats are protected with Content id and without Legal agreement loses all validity. Most upcoming producers either don't know or don't care about this, but here with Beat Merchant we are aware of your need for you to start making money off your talent. There are 2 types of beat license you can purchase: Exclusive license: When you acquire an exclusive license, there is no restriction of use rights, you can also use the beat in different projects, exploiting
